Cuomo Leads In Mayoral Poll

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) would lead multiple candidates in a New York City mayoral election, according to a new poll. The results could signal a potential return for the governor who resigned in scandal and for New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who is now under federal investigation.

Adams is under public scrutiny due to alleged payments from Turkey in his 2021 mayoral campaign. The FBI has carried out several search warrants in connection to the probe.

The poll surveyed a potential special election should Adams be removed from office or resign.

According to a Slingshot Strategies poll released this weekend, Cuomo could poll well in a potential political comeback. In an election not including Adams, Cuomo led prospective opponents.

Cuomo would beat current New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, earning 64% to Williams’ 36%.

In a wider field, Cuomo would lead the field with 22%. In second place would be Williams, with 15%, while former Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia came in third with 12%. Almost 40% of those asked were undecided.

The poll showed significant bad news for Adams. A majority of 52% would want Adams to resign if he were to be indicted. Another 38% would want him to stay in office.

A recent Quinnipiac poll found that Adams currently has a 28% approval rating, which is its lowest result in history.

New York City Deputy Mayor Fabien Levy (D) said that Adams would “keep fighting” for the people of New York “no matter what any wildly skewed polls or his political opponents say and no matter what other arrow of injustice is aimed his way.”

Cuomo resigned in 2021 following allegations of inappropriate behavior with his staff. He was also criticized by conservatives for his response to the 2020 COVID pandemic.

The federal government is currently investigating whether or not Adams acted improperly in regard to decisions involving the Turkish government. Adams’ electronic devices were seized by the FBI while his lead campaign fundraiser’s home was raided.

Cuomo has hinted that he may pursue political office in the future.
