The Commander of US Navy destroyer USS John McCain has been relieved of his duties after a social media backlash surrounding an improperly mounted rifle scope in his boat that drew attention on Friday.
A Navy statement said the commander, Edward Yaste, was relieved “due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command (the guided-missile destroyer) etc.”
The controversy began in April when an Instagram posting by the Navy showed Yaste with a rifle scope thrown off to one side. Stars and Stripes even quoted a caption that said, “From engaging in practice gun shoots, conducting maintenance, testing fuel purity and participating in sea and anchor details, the #USNavy is always ready to serve and protect.”
It did not take long for social media users to notice that the scope was reversed in the photo, sparking criticism from many. While the Marines posted a photo on their X account around the same time with an image of one holding another rifle properly set up, “clear sight picture.”
The Navy has since deleted the post with Yaste and released this statement: “Thank you for pointing out our rifle scope error in the previous post. Picture has been removed until EMI (extra military instruction) is completed.”
The USS John McCain is now deployed to the Middle East in support of the aircraft carrier, the USS Theodore Roosevelt. The change of command comes after Capt. J.J Yaste was dismissed last month.
