Former President Donald Trump continues to wield massive influence within the GOP, in large part because of his winning record of endorsing Republican candidates in primary races across the United States.
By the same token, he is also comfortable waging campaigns against members of his own party when he believes it is warranted. That was the case this week when he set his sights on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
Trump urged Republican leaders on Capitol Hill to remove McConnell from his influential position “immediately,” going on to argue that the Kentucky senator is only helping the Democratic Party advance its leftist agenda.
The former president laid out his evidence in a Truth Social post, pointing to McConnell’s controversial connection to China as the reason he is unable to stand up to Democrats.

“The Democrats have Mitch McConnell and his lovely wife, Elaine ‘Coco’ Chao, over a barrel,” Trump wrote.
As a result, he claimed that Democrats will refrain from pursuing a criminal case against McConnell as long as he “continues to give the Radical Left the Trillions and Trillions of Dollars that they constantly DEMAND.”
Specifically, Trump accused the GOP leader of failing to stand in the way of the Biden administration’s massive Inflation Reduction Act as it passed in the Senate along party lines. Although McConnell issued a scathing response to the “giant job-killing tax hikes” and “a war on American fossil fuel” laid out in the partisan spending plan, Trump insisted that his rhetoric was not enough.
“Mitch McConnell is not an Opposition Leader, he is a pawn for the Democrats to get whatever they want,” Trump added. “He is afraid of them, and will not do what has to be done. A new Republican Leader in the Senate should be picked immediately!”
McConnell and Chao have long faced accusations that they ignored threats and abuses by China’s communist regime in order to build a personal fortune through Foremost Group, a family-owned shipping company that operates primarily in China.
Trump’s social media post on Wednesday was just the latest statement taking aim at the questionable ties.
Just days earlier, he wrote: “Why do Republicans Senators allow a broken down hack politician, Mitch McConnell, to openly disparage hard working Republican candidates for the United States Senate[?] This is such an affront to honor and to leadership. He should spend more time (and money!) helping them get elected, and less time helping his crazy wife and family get rich on China!”
