Trump allies warn senators: Support cabinet picks or face challengers

Ardent supporters of the incoming President are issuing warnings to Republican senators facing re-election in 2026 regarding Cabinet nominations. Trump allies are keeping a watchful eye on how specific senators vote on nominee confirmations, particularly Iowa’s Joni Ernst and her stance on Pete Hegseth’s defense secretary nomination. Other GOP senators under scrutiny include Lindsey Graham, Thom Tillis, John Cornyn, Mike Rounds, and Susan Collins.

With a slim 53-47 Republican majority in the Senate, just four defectors could derail a nomination. Charlie Kirk, President of Turning Point USA, made a stern declaration: “We are prepared, along with a whole army of others, to primary these senators. This is not an empty threat. Donors are already calling, ready to back this effort.”

Ernst, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, initially expressed reservations about Hegseth’s nomination during a Fox News interview. After meeting with Hegseth and indicating continued “constructive conversations” on X, Ernst’s post was inundated with threats of a primary challenger, with one user bluntly stating, “Apparently, you didn’t get the memo: This is the MAGA party now. If you vote against Pete Hegseth, your political career is over.”

Shelly Capito, another Republican up for re-election in 2026, has also remained undecided on Hegseth’s nomination.

Hegseth himself faces allegations of excessive drinking and a past sexual assault settlement, though he denies all accusations.

Concerns have also emerged among Republicans over the nominations of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for the Department of Health and Human Services and former Democrat Tulsi Gabbard for national intelligence.

Meanwhile, former Rep. Matt Gaetz stepped aside from consideration as attorney general, despite being Trump’s initial pick and enjoying widespread MAGA support.
