Trump also said he would be “honored to have an endorsement” from independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr, whose candidacy threatens a coalition of anti-vaccine activists and traditional leftwing voters back home in the U.S.
“He is a very good person. If he endorsed me, I would be honored by it. I would be very honored by it. He really has his heart in the right place. He is a respected person,” Trump said.
“But, overall, I thought the Democrats, he was a Democrat, I don’t know what he is right now. But he was a Democrat. They treated him very badly. I think he would have, he goes around saying he would have beaten Biden in the primary. I think there was a good chance,” Trump said.
This came after Kennedy’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan said on Fox News they were “reassessing” whether to pull out of the race and back Trump.
Shanahan went on to conclude by saying that there was “only one party… who has obstructed a free election against us and it is unfortunately the Democratic Party.”
In another interview on the “Impact Theory” Podcast, Shanahan suggested he could back Trump saying, “We are really working hard to make sure that those who have infected our fair and free democracy do not end up in office.”
He repeated his assessment that the early stops of Kennedy made it “impossible” for him to win, and he insisted once more that had Kennedy lived longer he would have beaten President Biden.
Kennedy has not officially announced whether he will leave the race by week’s end, but ABC News reported that RFK Jr. is expected to “speak out as a nation” on Friday about his plans next steps.
In addition to talking about the possible endorsement, Trump discussed several other points including border and newly revised U.S. job growth figures. He blasted the major national news networks, stating: “Look at NBC and you look at ABC too… fake news. And what they’re doing is waging war on our country, but we’re going to win.”
