Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer rebuked his Republican counterparts for what he views as their prioritizing criticism of former President Obama over the coronavirus pandemic.
Republicans have recently attacked Obama for his criticism of the Department of Justice’s move to drop the charges against former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn. The former president alleged that the “rule of law is at risk” due to the DOJ’s decision. Many conservative pundits and politicians have speculated that the previous administration was actively trying to hurt President Trump.
Schumer attacked his colleagues across the political aisle for focusing on Flynn and the subsequent fallout of his charges being dropped instead of focusing on the pandemic during an interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Wednesday.
“It’s ridiculous,” he argued. “[Obama’s] been very restrained, and I want to say this, Andrea. Instead of doing what they’re supposed to do, Senate Republicans, coming up with answers to the COVID crisis, having oversight hearings to find out why small business isn’t getting the lending, why we’re not testing, we’re the hospitals are still hurting and not getting the money they need. Instead of having hearings and oversight on that, they’re coming up with these ridiculous conspiracy theories on Obama, and Chairman Johnson wants to go after Biden and this Hunter Biden conspiracy theory, which came from the Russians, of all people.”
Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Ron Johnson and his committee are investigating Hunter Biden’s role on the board of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian energy firm, and whether the former vice president used his position to protect his son from an investigation into the company’s owner.
Trump, in a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over the summer, requested that he look into allegations of corruption against the company. The request sparked the impeachment investigation last year that ultimately led to two charges against the president in the Democratic-led House. He was later acquitted by the GOP-controlled Senate.
“This is amazing to me. What alternative universe do they live in? Spending their time on discredited conspiracy theories against Obama, against Biden, instead of dealing with the greatest crisis we’ve had in America in decades and decades and decades,” Schumer said. “What universe are they in? What is in their heads? They don’t have to agree with me on everything that should be done about the crisis, but why aren’t they talking about it instead of absurd, often Russian-generated conspiracy theories against their political enemies?”
