Some progressives are turning on President Joe Biden after the White House released a statement Saturday praising Biden’s “bold” response to the Roe v. Wade reversal and calling abortion activists “out of step” with the Democratic Party.
Since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade became official on June 24, progressive Democrats have expressed frustration at the administration’s relative lack of action and called on the president to do more.
On Saturday, White House officials released a statement addressing the anger over the president’s abortion response. Instead of appeasing progressive supporters and promising further action, however, the statement doubled down, praising Biden’s “hard work” and calling out abortion activists as “consistently out of step.”
“The president has been showing his deep outrage as an American and executing his bold plan — which is the product of months of hard work — ever since this decision was handed down,” said White House communications director Kate Bedingfield.
“Joe Biden’s goal in responding to Dobbs is not to satisfy some activists who have been consistently out of step with the mainstream of the Democratic Party,” Bedingfield continued. “It’s to deliver help to women who are in danger and assemble a broad-based coalition to defend a woman’s right to choose now, just as he assembled such a coalition to win during the 2020 campaign.”
Progressive Democrats, including the abortion activists deemed by Biden as “out of step,” were predictably outraged by the administration’s response to their grievances. Many expressed frustration that the president was working to drum up support for Democrats in the upcoming midterms, while all but ignoring their current dissatisfaction.
“Remarkable statement from the White House, defending its tepid response to abortion by trashing … the left,” progressive reporter Jordan Zakarin said. “Vote harder … and go f*** yourselves.”
“Just a reminder — if you’ve been frustrated by the administration’s lack of response to Roe, that’s because you are, once again, out of step with the mainstream of the party,” wrote screenwriter Josh Olson. “So just go f*** yourself, and remember — vote in November!”
The White House has not yet responded to the criticisms of their statement.
