Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) appeared to get the cause of Memorial Day incorrect in a message on social media this week. Omar appeared to flip the meaning of Memorial Day with Veterans Day, which is in November and mentioned soldiers who came home from conflict.
“On #MemorialDay, we honor the heroic men and women who served our country,” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“We owe them more than our gratitude — they have more than earned access to quality mental health services, job opportunities, housing assistance and the benefits they were promised,” she wrote.
Omar was not the only one who appeared to not understand the meaning of the holiday. Rep. Cori Bush (R-MO) wrote on X that “This #MemorialDay & every day, we honor our veterans in St. Louis.”
“We must invest in universal health care, affordable housing, comprehensive mental health services and educational & economic opportunities for our veterans as we work to build a world free of war and violence,” she wrote.

Both representatives later deleted their tweets.
However, both received considerable criticism online for their original posts.
Memorial Day commemorates members of the armed forces who fell in the line of duty.
This is not the first time that Omar has been criticized for her comments apparently misunderstanding major events. She downplayed the effects of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, which sparked considerable attention.
Oma’s daughter Isra Hirsi later claimed to be homeless and spoke of a chemical weapon used against protesters that turned out to be a foul-smelling gag item. She also claimed that she was targeted for arrest.
Omar has also received considerable criticism for her support of anti-Israel student protesters. Her own daughter was arrested during one of these protests in New York City and received considerable media attention.
The representative later spoke to the student protesters and endorsed future demonstrations. The protesters at Columbia University seized several academic buildings and set up a tent city that was later dismantled by police.
