- Bill Maher expressed skepticism about Andrew Cuomo’s chances of becoming New York City’s mayor, citing the former governor’s controversial handling of the coronavirus pandemic as a major obstacle. During a conversation with Chris Cuomo, the former governor’s brother, Maher was direct about Andrew’s political prospects. “I don’t think he’s going to get past the nursing home thing,” Maher stated. “Politics is a highwire act. One boner decision can make people go, ‘I’m sorry, I can’t trust that guy’s judgment.’ Or they don’t.
I don’t know what the fuck will happen.” Despite these concerns, Chris Cuomo defended his brother, suggesting that Andrew could help shape the Democratic Party’s identity and direction. The criticism of Cuomo’s pandemic response centers on the devastating impact of his nursing home policies.

His administration’s directive resulted in more than 15,000 coronavirus-related deaths in New York’s nursing homes and assisted living facilities, after facilities were required to accept COVID-positive residents in 2020. Adding to the controversy, Melissa DeRosa, Cuomo’s secretary, acknowledged that her team deliberately underreported death figures to avoid scrutiny. Further investigations revealed that Cuomo attempted to exert improper influence over an adviser who testified in the congressional probe of his nursing home mandate.
In a separate development, following his recent White House visit, Maher offered surprising praise for President Trump’s political acumen. Despite being a frequent critic, Maher acknowledged Trump as “one of the most effective politicians,” regardless of personal opinions about his policies or character.

He particularly noted Trump’s authenticity, stating, “The people are not savvy about issues but they smell a phony a mile away and that kind of shit, nobody else does it.” Maher concluded with observations about the Democratic Party’s struggle to counter Trump’s unique political style. “You know, he has those moments that no other politician has. And the Democrats have to find that guy,” he said, adding, “But let’s be real — they’ve been searching for years, and they’re still coming up empty.”
