Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) is investigating whether or not Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis (D) coordinated her prosecution of former President Donald Trump with special counsel Jack Smith. The probe by the leading congressional Republican also comes as conservatives questioned the validity of the charges stemming from the aftermath of the 2020 election.
Jordan stated on Thursday that he was seeking answers from Willis and requested documents related to the indictment, including whether or not the district attorney spoke with Smith or federal officials regarding the charges.

Jordan wrote to Willis that her “indictment and prosecution implicate substantial federal interests, and the circumstances surrounding your actions raise serious concerns about whether they are politically motivated.”
Jordan said that it was “noteworthy that just four days before this indictment, you launched a new campaign fundraising website that highlighted your investigation into President Trump.”
He further wrote that the forewoman of the grand jury empaneled to discuss possible charges against Trump “earlier this year bragged during an unusual media tour about her excitement at the prospect of subpoenaing President Trump and getting to swear him in.”
The Ohio Republican also questioned the timing of the proposed trial date, which is immediately prior to a number of crucial 2024 Republican primaries.
“The timing of this prosecution reinforces concerns about your motivation,” he said.
Jordan wrote that the House Judiciary Committee, which he chairs, “thus may investigate whether federal law enforcement agencies or officials were involved in your investigation or indictment. It may also investigate whether DOJ raised any concerns about how your investigation impacted federal interests, and if so, whether and how those concerns were resolved.”
Willis previously stated that she did not know the special prosecutor and that she did not “know what Jack Smith is doing, Jack Smith doesn’t know what I’m doing.”
Trump was booked in Fulton County this week. Willis is pursuing RICO charges against the former president and a number of figures tied to his administration.
