Numerous Republican officials offered their strong support for former President Donald Trump following his arrest this week on charges related to the aftermath of the 2020 election. The officials also condemned the prosecution by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D), citing what they increasingly describe as a ‘two-tiered’ justice system.
Following the arrest and posting of the mugshot by the president on X, formerly known as Twitter, Trump was supported by a number of sitting Republican officials. The post represented Trump’s first post on the social media network in more than two-and-a-half years.
The former president was welcomed back by Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ), who also wrote that the “American people have your back.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), a close Trump ally, posted a photo of herself in a mock mugshot, mirroring the one of the former president.
“I stand with President Trump against the commie DA Fani Willis who is nothing more than a political hitman tasked with taking out Biden’s top political opponent,” she wrote in her social media post. “Persecution, not prosecution.”
Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) called the post “beautiful” and “epic.”
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) wrote on X that the former president’s mugshot make him look “like a pissed off and angry badass” and called it “an iconic historic photo.”
“It’s going viral, and it’s making a heck of a statement,” he wrote.
He separately wrote that presidential candidates should promise to pardon the former president if convicted.
