endorsement for artificial intelligence (AI). During a podcast interview last week, Kudrow expressed her concerns regarding the implications of AI on the acting industry.

The film, directed by Robert Zemeckis and released in October, featured Hanks and his co-star Robin Wright appearing younger in certain scenes through the use of de-aging technology. Kudrow explained her perspective, stating, “All I got from that was, this is an endorsement for AI.”

Clarifying her stance, Kudrow said, “It’s not like, ‘Oh it’s going to ruin everything.’ But what will be left? Forget actors, what about up-and-coming actors? They’ll just be licensing and recycling.”

She further questioned the implications on job opportunities, asking, “Set that completely aside, what work will there be for human beings? Then what? There’ll be some kind of living stipend for people, you won’t have to work? How can it possibly be enough?”

Hanks himself had made headlines last year for his views on AI. In May 2023, the Oscar winner noted on a podcast that his performances “could go on and on” with AI’s help, even after his eventual death. “Anybody can now recreate themselves at any age they are by way of AI or deep fake technology,” he said. “I could be hit by a bus tomorrow and that’s it.”

Hanks acknowledged the legal challenges surrounding AI, stating that “all of the guilds, all of the agencies and all of the legal firms” were trying to figure out the “legal ramifications of my face and my voice and everybody else’s being our intellectual property.”

In October 2023, Hanks clarified to his Instagram followers that an AI-generated version of himself was promoting a dental plan on the app, advising users to “beware.”

Other celebrities have also weighed in on the issue of AI in the industry, with Arnold Schwarzenegger calling “The Terminator” movie a “reality” in July 2023, and Ice-T expressing openness to “potentially act[ing] forever” with AI in December 2023.
