As the fallout from President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance continues to rock the Democrat party, plans are being made in case Biden decides against running.
CNN’s chief national affairs correspondent Jeff Zeleny, while speaking on “The Lead” with Jake Tapper, revealed that White House advisers have mentioned a “contingency plan” in case Joe Biden decides not to run for re-election. According to Zeleny, these plans involve potentially supporting Vice President Kamala Harris and releasing Democratic delegates to back her.
Zeleny noted that Biden and Harris have been spending more time together recently than they usually do. He also noted that Harris joined Biden for lunch and attended a meeting with Democratic Governors at the White House.

Zeleny added that while such interactions are common, the timing suggests a deliberate show of support. The CNN reporter revealed that one White House adviser insisted that Biden stands with his vice president.

“I am told by several advisers that if he (Biden) makes that decision( to drop out) he would be expected to immediately throw his support behind his vice president and asked his delegates to also support her,” Zeleny said. “And then former presidents and party leaders would also be asked and likely agreed to support her as well. All may not, but there’ll be asked to do so. One adviser telling me this who would stand up against our historic vice president to be our nominee for president? The bottom line here is time is running out. Time is running short. The Democratic convention is next month. No one is sure how long Biden will take to decide this. So again, a contingency plan, a succession plan, if he makes that decision. Will everyone be pleased by this? Perhaps not, but that’s where this looks like it is going.”

Zeleny’s revelation comes as the president continues to face pressure to bow out of the 2024 race. Democrat politicians and Megadonors, such as longtime Democratic donor Damon Lindelof, have made calls for the president to drop off.
Lindelof, a Hollywood showrunner, wrote a piece in Deadline where he called on other megadonors to stop donating until Biden drops out.
❝My name is Damon Lindelof. I am a lifelong Democrat and I love my complicated, glorious country. I am not writing this anonymously because I’m asking others in positions of influence to do the same. “My name is Damon Lindelof,” Lindelof wrote. “I am a lifelong Democrat and I love my complicated, glorious country. I am not writing this anonymously because I’m asking others in positions of influence to do the same… When they text you asking for cash, text back that you’re not giving them a penny and you won’t change your mind until there’s change at the top of the ticket. And when Joe finally leaves the mound, I will stand and applaud. Because he truly pitched a great game.”
