Rep. Jonathan Jackson, an Illinois Democrat from Chicago, expressed his views on the issue of migrants during an appearance on Newsmax’s “National Report.” He criticized the practice of using migrants as “pawns” and moving them across the state. Jackson emphasized the importance of following federal immigration laws, ensuring those who have committed crimes are appropriately sentenced and returned to their countries of origin. However, he also advocated for compassion in handling the situation.
Jackson argued that the wealthy are not impacted by immigration in the same way as the poor. He stated, “It doesn’t impact their schools. They don’t know who does their laundry. They don’t know who cuts their grass, and they simply are now trying to create a war amongst the poor.” He claimed that schools previously closed in Chicago have been reopened to accommodate migrants, while Illinois residents in need of housing and food assistance have had resources diverted away from them.
“This has been used as a wedge issue to attack and make a war against the poor,” Jackson said. “I want to fight poverty, not fight poor people.”
Jackson believes that Chicago residents should have the opportunity to decide whether their city remains a sanctuary city. “If they decide to rescind it, let’s rescind it,” he stated.
