During an appearance on CNN’s “News Central,” Representative Mike Quigley (D-IL) expressed concerns over President Joe Biden’s decision to commute the sentences of 37 out of the 40 individuals on federal death row to life without parole. The host, Kate Bolduan, questioned Quigley about Biden’s move, which the President stated was intended to prevent the incoming administration from resuming executions that he had halted.

Quigley acknowledged his overall reservations regarding the death penalty but also voiced apprehensions about the Executive Branch overriding judicial decisions made by courts across the country. He emphasized the importance of maintaining autonomy in the judicial system. While understanding the concerns about the potential actions of the Trump administration, Quigley asserted that commutations or pardons should be granted when there is a belief that justice was not served in those cases. He warned that Biden’s action sets a precedent that extends beyond pardoning his son, Hunter Biden, which Quigley deemed a mistake, as no one should be above the law.

“It sets a precedent here that goes well beyond his pardoning his own son, which which again, I think was a mistake because no one is above the law because it does,” Quigley said.
Bolduan acknowledged Quigley’s point, suggesting that Biden’s commutations seemed to be used as a policy tool to prevent the incoming administration from implementing policies they believe in, which differs from the Hunter Biden pardon situation.
Quigley concurred with Bolduan’s assessment, stating, “You know absolutely.”
