Biden Stepping Down Is About Securing The House, Not The Presidency

Breaking news as President Joe Biden has officially announced his resignation from the 2024 presidential election. Following his resignation, he endorsed current Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place.

As it turns out, switching out President Biden for Vice President Harris might have less to do with defeating former President Trump but rather about saving seats down-ballot. In other words, polling has revealed that Harris doesn’t fare that much better than Biden, but it may be enough to salvage seats.

The Senate is going to be really tough. It will be a House flipping strategy, however. Today it is 220 to 213, with two vacancies. Democrats only need to win back a few of those seats in order to take the House.

Democrats have spent more than a year deriding how the Republicans run the House. Republicans have given them loads of cannon fodder, starting with taking days to elect former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) only for him to be deposed by the autumn. The House subsequently took 22 days to elect the first speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) after gaveling out of a pro forma session, repealing three proposed candidates.

It has also issued numerous censures and contempt of Congress resolutions, sometimes against the desires of party leaders. Democrats have also pointed to the theatrics of Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO).

The chaos itself was assumed by the Democrats to give them good odds of winning the House, but Biden appeared a drag on that possibility. This move could equally be about the House as it is about the presidency.

However, major Democratic leaders, such as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have steered clear of backing anyone just yet.
